Larissa Waters on the 7PM Project

Senator Larissa Waters First Speech

Canberra Trip

On 23 August 2011, I had the privilege of travelling to Canberra with fellow Greens members to witness Larissa Water's historic first speech in the Senate. Besides the main event, highlights of the trip included a behind the scenes tour of Parliament House with Andrew Bartlett, and a visit to the High Court to sit in on part of the hearing by the full bench of the Malaysia Asylum Seekers case (a decision will be handed down on Wednesday, 31 August 2011).

Listing to Larissa deliver her speech, I felt so proud to be member of the Greens and a Queenslander. Larissa's passion for our State, its people and the environment was inspiring, and I came home with renewed energy and optimism that we can work together to secure a clean, green, sustainable future for all Queenslanders.

After Larissa's speech, members of the Queensland Greens joined Larissa, her friends and family, staffers and fellow Greens Senators for a celebration, before heading out to Portia's Place for dinner.

Thanks must go to the members of the ACT Greens who looked after us while we were in Canberra, particularly those members who opened their homes and gave us a warm bed for the night.
